If you have searched for a “best ATS resume checker,” you already know the trap: listicles rarely say what you can do without a credit card, what happens to your file, or whether you leave with an editable next draft — not just a percentage.
On 2026-08-11 we ran a head-to-head: the same synthetic junior software-engineer resume and the same real public backend job description (Hive, via Lever) through five checkers, scoring each after its free/signup gate was clear. The scoreboard and conclusions below come from that one shared run — we are not claiming a multi-resume sweep. If you are curious, try the same protocol with a few resumes of your own.
We did not score template builders or job-application CRMs (for example Enhancv or Teal). If you need a designed PDF or an application tracker, use those products — this comparison is about checkers and one-shot tailoring.
How we scored
Each dimension is 1–5 (higher is better for a job seeker who wants a light, honest trial):
- Free without signup — useful output before an account wall
- Privacy / data handling — from product behavior and public claims (we do not invent retention facts)
- Price fairness for light users — pay-per-use or cheap one-shot vs subscription-only
- JD match / keyword diagnostic depth — Match%, gaps, ATS-style breakdowns
- Actionable rewrite — editable optimized text, not only a score
- Company-specific help — named company / role beyond raw keyword paste
- Time to first useful output — convenience from landing to something you can use

Same Hive run, raw signals: Jobscan Match Rate 39% with Lever ATS Detected; Skillsyncer Job Match 37%; ResyMatch overall 28%; Resume Worded writing score 26/100; HireMe ~18 seconds to a full company-tailored draft (no Match%). Where HireMe lost
HireMe is not the Match% champion. Jobscan — and to a degree Skillsyncer and ResyMatch — give keyword-gap tables, section scores, and sometimes an “ATS Detected” label. HireMe showed a short ATS keyword list and a rewritten resume. If your question is “show me the diagnostic report,” pick Jobscan.
Two more limits, said plainly: we do not score LinkedIn profiles (Resume Worded does), and AI rewrites can invent metrics. On our run, the draft added details that were not in the fixture (for example Redis, sub-100ms latency, and a −25% bug claim). Treat every line as editable draft text — the product itself labels output “AI-generated · For reference only.”
Where each tool won
Jobscan: Deepest Match Rate plus Lever ATS detection and Searchability / Hard Skills / Soft Skills tables. Best when you want a classic ATS-style report. Tradeoff: account required before the full report; the UI is dense; the main path is diagnosis, not a full rewrite.
Resume Worded: Strong writing checks and Magic Write bullet rewrites. Tradeoff: hard signup before results; free tier stays on basic issues with a heavy Pro upsell; inventing impact in rewrites is a risk — same honesty rule as any AI editor.
Skillsyncer: Fast Match% and a missing-keyword list inside an editor (~10 seconds after login). Free tier is real but capped (we saw 2 scans/week). Tradeoff: no personal scan without an account; company names can get treated as keywords.
ResyMatch: A score in about 20 seconds with no account, and $0 for light use. Tradeoff: scrolling hits a signup wall for the full tip list; no company-named rewrite on our run.
HireMe: Full useful output with no account (3 free tries), on-page claim that the resume is never stored on servers, company-named rewrite plus interview questions, and pay-per-use pricing ($1 / credits, no subscription). Tradeoff: weak Match% depth — see above.

Method note
The resume is a synthetic fixture (no real PII). The job post came from a public listing on test day. All five tools used that same resume and the same JD. We did not purchase upgrades during the test. Extra synthetic fixtures stay internal for optional later deep-dives and are not part of this scoreboard.
